The
Arts Council of Southern Indiana seeks to improve the quality of
life for our community by nurturing the growth of arts and culture
in the lives of children and youth.
A group of musicians who realized
the need for an organization to support artistic programming formed
the Floyd County Council for the Arts in New Albany in 1976.
In addition to quality arts
education programming, the organization accepted the role of regional
arts partner with the the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) in 1999
and became the Arts Council of Southern Indiana (ACSI). As a regional
arts partner, the ACSI offered annual grants for arts project
support to nonprofit organizations and Indiana public agencies
in the counties of Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott, and
Washington. Funding for the regional partnership grants was provided
by the IAC (www.in.gov/arts) and the National Endowment for the
Arts.
The Arts Council of Southern
Indiana will not be serving as a regional arts partner for the
fiscal years 2010 and 2011. The organization may apply for this
role in the future depending upon state funding and the necessary
restructuring of the Indiana Arts Commission.
"The Arts Council's
board of directors has gone through a period of introspection
to reinvent and expand the council's mission. We believe the arts
are an essential aspect of a civilized society, with far-reaching
cultural implications that apply to business, science, governance,
international relations, and quality of life." (from
